Denise Austin has sold more than 20 million exercise videos, as well as written two books on nutrition and living a healthy lifestyle. She is a consultant to the President’s Counsel on Physical Fitness and Sports and has had two television shows to showcase her many talents as an exercise instructor.

About Spot Reducing

Losing body fat in one specific area, or spot reducing, is a myth of the exercise world. Body fat cannot be lost in any one specific area despite doing very specific exercises for that area. Body fat is only lost through a reduced calorie diet and exercise combination. A caloric deficit will lead to fat loss, not toning exercises for one body part.

Denise Austin, in referring to “spot toning” is using exercises to strengthen and tone a specific area of the body. Any specific area of the body can be made stronger through exercise, but will not necessarily be smaller due to the body fat covering it.

Customize

This DVD can be customized by picking and choosing one, two or any combination of the following five minute segments

  • Warm-up
  • Chest firmer
  • Arm shaper
  • Shoulder definer
  • Back sculptor
  • Bun lifter
  • Thigh trimmer
  • Hip slimmer
  • Inner thigh tightener
  • Waist cincher
  • Ab chisler
  • Cool down

The Warm up and Cool down should be done before and after any workout combination to get the muscles ready for a workout, and cool them down after.

Due to the fact that this is a customizable workout, the transition from one five minute segment to the next is not a smooth one. Each workout is separate and does not flow into the next. It’s a short break though, maybe 30 seconds and allows the exercise time to get a quick drink of water or prepare for the next group of exercises.

Preset workouts for Upper Body, Lower Body and Abs are also included in the Main Menu.

Beginner Workout

Denise Austin's Ten 5-Minute Target Toners is a beginner weight training workout. The moves are basic and easy to follow and can be done using hand held dumbbells or with just body weight. Each exercise only has one set of repetitions, so is definitely not enough work for a more advanced exerciser. Modifications are shown or discussed for many of the exercises. Any exercise using dumbbells can be made more challenging by using heavier weights.

Effective Workout

Overall, this is an effective workout for beginners. The movements are easy to follow and effective. It will be a good addition for a new home workout program. There are a good variety of exercises in each segment to keep the user interested and using the muscles in a new way.
